Which Valerian Material Should You Buy?

Root powder is a higher-bulk fill than extract. If the label will print a marker, start from a valerenic-acid-specified extract — not from powder with a % added later.

Valerenic Acid Specification: What Buyers Should Put on the PO

Valerenic acids are quality markers for V. officinalis root, not a disease-claim ingredient. Untitled “0.8% standardized” is not a complete specification.

Marker math: extract mg × valerenic acids % = marker mg per serving. Example: 400 mg extract × 0.8% = 3.2 mg marker when that % is total valerenic acids and finished assay agrees. Extract milligrams are not valerenic-acid milligrams.

Pharmacopoeial floors are identity / quality conversations, not a private-label catalog.

USP-NF Valerian (herbal substance) discusses NLT 0.05% valerenic acid and NLT 0.17% total valerenic acids on the dried basis;

USP-NF Powdered Valerian Extract discusses NLT 0.3% valerenic acid and NLT 0.6% total valerenic acids, with a 4:1–7:1 starting-material ratio.

Confirm the edition in force. Those numbers are not a default commercial % on this page and are not a finished-capsule guarantee.

Quality control path: incoming identity → named marker method → blend → fill → pack inspection → finished tests as scoped → batch release.

Identity. HPTLC or macroscopic / microscopic check against the approved V. officinalis root / rhizome reference. Indian valerian must be declared if used. DNA barcoding when the risk assessment asks — not a default every-lot test.

Marker and finished assay. See Valerenic Acid Specification. Gummy or softgel processes need extra finished verification if a marker is claimed.

Consistency. Extreme lot-to-lot smell swing can signal drying, storage, or substitution.

Contaminants. Heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiology to the destination specification. Elemental impurities follow USP 〈2232〉 and project-specific permitted daily exposure — not a raw-material ppm line copied from the chapter. Residual solvents: ICH Q3C when ethanol or another listed solvent is on the extract.

Changing the approved extract supplier may require requalification.

UK food-supplement vs U.S. dietary supplement vs EU traditional herbal registration changes the document set — name the class on the brief. Melatonin or GABA on the BOM is market-dependent.

Higher evening extract loads, or a hops pair, need label review for residual drowsiness. Alcohol or other sedatives in the same use occasion need a warning review. Melatonin on the BOM does not cancel residual. Valerian supplements are not replacements for prescription sleep medications.

Brand owners review finished warnings with local counsel, including pregnancy, lactation, and pediatric populations (not default SKUs).

Packaging follows moisture sensitivity, volatile retention, dosage form, and target market.

What is the difference between valerian root powder and valerian extract?
Powder is the milled root. A ratio extract needs a real DER and named solvent. A valerenic-acid-specified extract is standardized to a named valerenic-acid level and method. They are not interchangeable kilogram quotes.

What does valerian extract standardized to valerenic acids mean?
It means the extract is controlled to a named valerenic-acid analyte, a named method, and a named result — not an untitled “standardized %.” See Valerenic Acid Specification.

Can valerian root powder be used in capsules?
Yes. Powder can be encapsulated, but it requires a higher fill volume than extract. Quote milligrams as powder, not as extract.

Can valerian and hops be combined in one formula?
Yes. Specify two assays and cone / strobile hops extract, not xanthohumol. Combined bulk and bitterness can change capsule size or push a film-coated tablet. A third botanical (passionflower) needs its own flavonoid / vitexin file—do not print one blend weight.

Can you make a melatonin-free evening formula with L-theanine or magnesium?
Yes. L-theanine needs its own milligrams and purity. Magnesium needs the salt named and elemental Mg per serving. Neither replaces the valerenic-acid specification.

Is valerian plus melatonin a default SKU?
No. Melatonin is quoted only when the destination market and product category allow it. Confirm that file before formulation.

Can valerenic acids be guaranteed on the finished label?
They can be released against a finished-unit assay when the label prints them. See Valerenic Acid Specification.

What information do you need for a valerian OEM quote?
