R&D reviews fill weight before artwork. Typical commercial loads are development ranges, not recommended intakes.
The first two options lock the artichoke specification. The next four lock companion formulas — each botanical stays its own specification.
Artichoke as a row in a cardio-wellness formula, a weight-management complex, or a bergamot metabolic brief is quoted from the BOM. Structure/function language stays with the brand owner and counsel.
Use when: Artichoke leads a digestive-positioned SKU, and the panel prints leaf extract without a named companion.
Specify: Leaf + extract mg, or the marker name if the percentage is still open.
Trade-off: A numbered marker claim requires a separate specification. When silymarin is the lead marker, the specification changes to a milk-thistle-led formula.
Default format: Capsule — the usual OEM start. Higher-load programs are specified as tablets.
Use when: The artwork prints a numbered marker. This option is a marker specification, not a second botanical.
Specify: Cynarin or total caffeoylquinic acids, plus the method on the same line.
Trade-off: Write extract ratio and dried-leaf equivalent on separate lines from the marker.

Use when: A two-botanical SKU keeps artichoke as the hero. Milk thistle is the companion row.

Choose the Artichoke Format: Capsules, Tablets, Powder, Gummies or Liquid
Dosage form selection comes after active-load calculation, not before it. Dry leaf extract can be evaluated for capsules, tablets, powders, gummies, or liquids. Softgel requires a separate oil-phase feasibility path.
Best for: First-line OEM — single extract or dry botanical blends; the shell hides the bitter note.
Specify: Capsule size, fill weight, units per serving, HPMC or gelatin.
Feasibility: Final count follows bulk density, extract load, and companions (especially ginger or milk thistle). Multi-count servings are normal at higher loads.

Specify: Tablet weight, tablets per serving, hardness, disintegration, uncoated vs film coat, punch geometry. One large tablet versus two smaller tablets is a brief field.
Feasibility: Hygroscopic, bitter leaf extract often needs granulation. Film coating is specified after tablet weight, hardness, friability, and disintegration are within range. A capsule formula is re-validated before a tablet run; lubricants and tablet weight usually change.

A usable quote requires traceability from the label claim to the raw-material specification. Leaf, marker name, and method sit on one specification line; extract ratio and herb equivalent sit on another.

1. Identity
Globe artichoke is Cynara scolymus on typical commercial COAs. This manufacturing path defaults to leaf; heart / flower-head and whole-herb materials are separate identities and POs. Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) is a different species and purchase specification.
2. Active declaration
Cynarin is one named caffeoylquinic acid. Total caffeoylquinic acids is a broader marker family. Two suppliers can both print “5%” while referring to different markers or methods. A percentage is not comparable until the marker and assay method are named.
These four panel languages are what “artichoke 500 mg” can actually mean — examples, not catalog SKUs:

3. Processing declaration
A 10:1 or 20:1 figure describes how much raw leaf went into the extract. A cynarin % or total CQA % is a measured marker. Specify extract ratio separately from marker standardization.
Retail panels sometimes print “extract equivalent to 8000 mg dried leaf.”
Equivalent mg ≠ extract mg ≠ cynarin mg.
4. Finished-product verification
The label declaration and approved product specification determine the relevant raw-material and finished-product verification.
Raw-material and finished-product specifications must be aligned to the label declaration. A 500 mg extract claim does not automatically mean the finished-product assay should report 500 mg extract; extract weight, marker %, dried-leaf equivalent, and finished-unit assay are separate specification fields.
Artichoke pricing also carries the applicable pesticide, residual-solvent, heavy-metal, and microbiological panels.

A higher extract or marker claim changes the unit before it changes the artwork.
- Concentrated leaf extract is bitter and often hygroscopic. Higher loads can require multiple capsules or a coated tablet after fill and compression data are established.
- Ginger and milk thistle rarely share artichoke leaf-extract density; blend uniformity follows all densities on the table.
- Overage is set from stability and process data for the approved grade — a project decision.
Comparing prices before matching specifications
Challenge
Two raw-material offers arrive as “standardized artichoke leaf extract.” Price is compared first.
Approach
Normalize the two offers against the approved specification before comparing price. Until the fields match, the cheaper lot is not an apples-to-apples quote.
A dried-leaf equivalent quoted as if it were extract weight
Challenge
A supplier quotes “8000 mg equivalent” without showing the extract weight behind the equivalent.
Approach
Separate dried-leaf equivalent, extract weight, and marker declaration before the PO is compared.

A kilogram drum quote is a raw-material quote — finished-unit MOQ is separate. Samples follow specification lock; production scheduling follows formula, artwork, and testing-plan approval.
What is the difference between cynarin and total caffeoylquinic acids?
Cynarin is a named individual marker; total caffeoylquinic acids is a broader marker group. Specify and test them as separate declaration bases. A “5%” figure is not comparable until the marker and method are aligned.
What does “8000 mg dried-leaf equivalent” mean?
Dried-leaf equivalent describes the raw-material equivalent. It is not the extract weight in the unit and not the marker amount. Specify equivalent, extract milligrams, and marker separately.
Is artichoke heart extract the same grade as leaf extract?
This page defaults to leaf extract. Heart / flower-head and whole-herb materials are separate specifications and POs.
Is globe artichoke the same as Jerusalem artichoke?
No. Finished supplements use globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus) leaf. Jerusalem artichoke is Helianthus tuberosus — usually a tuber / inulin conversation, and a different purchase order.
